Mailing lists 'could come under threat' as online attacks grow

Marketers could see their mailing lists and databases come under attack as online attacks increase in frequency this year, a new report suggests.
According to a survey carried out by network security company Arbor Networks, more than a third (35 per cent) of IP network operators believe there will be a rise in online attacks focusing on applications instead of operating systems in 2010.
The study, which questioned 136 companies, found that there will also be an increase in attacks that require bandwidths of 1Gbps or less.
Just over a quarter (26 per cent) of network operators said they expect to see an increase in large-scale botnet attacks.
The firm said the increase in frequency and sophistication of online attacks when considered together, represents a serious threat to the stability of web-based firms.
Arbor Networks' survey echoes that of Network Box, which found that the frequency of online attacks grew "dramatically" in December 2009. More than half (57 per cent) of all threats were attributed to phishing, compared to 28.3 per cent in November.
