A new survey suggests that many firms are not taking business data security seriously enough and may be compromising security.
According to a study sponsored by data security experts Credant Technologies, around 4,500 portable data storage devices have been forgotten in clothing, potentially compromising the security of consumer lists and business lists.
The study's authors said that although this figure is half of the number of portable data storage devices left in people's pockets 12 months ago, it is still an unnecessarily high number.
Sean Glynn, vice-president and chief marketing officer at Credant Technologies, said: "We would urge users to take more care than ever not to download unprotected customer details and other sensitive information that if lost could lead to a security breach, especially now there are harsh fines afoot."
From April 6th 2010, the Information Commissioner's Office will have new powers to fine companies up to £500,000 if they lose data resulting in a significant security breach.
