Gordon Browns review of information sharing practices in the public and private sector has been backed by the Information Commissioner Richard Thomas.
The review has been revealed by the Prime Minister, as part of a range of measures designed to make the government more open and increase the level of public access to information.
Mr Thomas will work alongside the director of the Wellcome Trust, Professor Mark Walport, to review the ways in which personal data is shared and protected by both sectors.
Recommendations will be made on data-sharing policy, to ensure transparency and accountability, and possible changes to how the Data Protection Act operates in the UK including powers available to the Information Commissioner"s Office and the courts will also be considered.
Mr Thomas told Precision Marketing: "The review will consider how best we can ensure our society reaps the benefits of sensible information sharing whilst ensuring the right privacy and other safeguards for individuals and society."
