Retailers can expect to enjoy increased internet sales over the Christmas period, according to new figures, which indicate that online expenditure during December will rise.
Research carried out by the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) indicates that online sales for the fourth quarter of 2007 are likely to reach the £15 billion mark.
This figure for the period would represent a 60 per cent hike on the figure recorded for the same three-month period last year, which was £9.6 billion.
Jo Evans, managing director of IMRG, said: "October's IMRG Capgemini e-retail sales index shows there is no sign of the online shopping boom petering out, even when other factors impact overall shopping trends."
Ms Evans added that with internet shopping sales still growing 20 times faster than high street sales - estimated to be worth just under £1 billion per week - any traditional 'bricks-and-mortar' retailers who do not have an online presence are effectively seeing their available market share eroded.
