Poorly designed content management systems (CMS) can be the single largest cause of problems to websites than any other factor, an industry expert has warned.
According to Patrick Altoft, the choice of CMS is one of the most important decisions a marketing professional can make.
Many e-commerce scripts and simple CMSs profess to be "SEO friendly" because the offer custom title tags and meta tags.
But the problem is that they tend to "prioritise the ease of page generation over everything else", which can wreak havoc with search engine friendliness, Mr Altoft said.
CMSs can create thousands of useless extra pages on website, which can cause further problems and drag down Google rankings.
Writing on E-consultancy, Mr Altoft commented: "The simple fact is that most business owners want a CMS so that they can avoid paying a designer to keep the site updated.
"Unfortunately sometimes the SEO cost of using a CMS is more than the cost of the designer's fees."
