An adware programme has topped security firm Kaspersky Lab monthly malware list for the first time.
Kaspersky's Online Scanner chart for February 2008 includes 11 new entries and half of the chart is occupied by Trojan variants such as diallers, droppers and downloaders, reports VNUNet.
According to Kaspersky, the Virtumonde.gen family of programmes has been assisted by Trojan downloaders which, together with other types of Trojan, continue to be the main online threat to businesses.
Kaspersky recorded several Trojan downloaders that have installed the difficult to remove Virtumonde programme on victims' computers.
The firm also acknowledges in the report that the prevalence of hybrid malware, in which Trojans are used as a back-door for malicious programmes has continued.
David Emm, senior technology consultant at Kaspersky Lab, said: "There's little chance that crimeware will go away any time soon. Some will break new ground, finding new and better ways to achieve the same goal.
"In particular, crimeware authors are likely to target the growing numbers of wireless devices that are increasingly used by enterprises and users alike."
