Royal Mail and CWU in fresh talks to avert strike action

Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) are engaged in fresh talks today (Wednesday October 28th) aimed at averting a strike.

It is hoped that a deal can be reached before the three 24-hour strikes take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week.

Industry figures are eager for industrial action to be prevented because the strikes could have a debilitating effect on businesses that rely on postal services such as the direct mail industry.

The contentious issues which the talks will revolve around are pay, employment conditions and the modernisation of the postal service.

A decision about whether or not a strike will go ahead is likely to be reached just hours before the industrial action is scheduled to begin.

Royal Mail announced last week that it plans to take on an additional 30,000 temporary employees to help ease the burden of the Christmas period and deal with the backlog created by the strike action.

The announcement was met with criticism from union bosses, who threatened to take legal action against Royal Mail if it goes ahead with the employment of temporary workers.
