Company representatives have been given a lesson in email marketing etiquette from an industry insider.

DJ Waldow, of marketing firm Blue Sky Factory, says being given a business card by a potential client at a networking event should not be considered a license to add them to a mailing list for your company’s email marketing campaign.

In an article for Media Post, Mr Waldow said: “[If I give you a business card] I’m telling you to contact me; you, not your company.

“Once the initial communication has occurred – say an email in this case – both parties agree how the relationship will continue from there.”

He added that the provision of a business card by someone potentially interested in doing business with a particular company does not necessarily mean that party wishes to receive marketing offers via their work email address.

Blue Sky Factory started life as a web design company before branching out into the email marketing sector.
