The value of keeping data clean and up-to-date has been emphasised in a report published by Deloitte’s audit group.
The company, who provide audit, tax, consulting and financial advisory services, has warned that although organisations may be able to ignore their standard of data quality for a period of time, eventually dirty data will rear its head and cause mayhem within business processes.
The metaphor Deloitte use to describe the vital nature of data hygiene is particularly cautionary.
“Ultimately, poor data quality is like dirt on the windshield,” the report says.
“You may be able to drive for a long time with slowly degrading vision, but at some point, you either have to stop and clear the windshield or risk everything.”
If managed properly, Deloitte insist data will drive revenues, reduce costs and mitigate risk.
The organisation advises companies to consider reliable data as the cornerstone of effective business.
