Businesses have to make sure that the tools they use for data intelligence is fit for purpose, an expert has said.

Roger Llewellyn, chief executive of Kognitio, pointed out that many of the tools and methodologies that are being used in companies’ IT departments now are ten to 15 years old.

He explained that if firms keep using the same tools and strategies, they will simply end up getting the same results.

Mr Llewellyn predicted that in the foreseeable future, firms will begin to fully grasp the concept of business intelligence (BI).

“We’re going to see BI projects become a lot smaller and implemented faster and at a lower cost – that is what is going to be the change,” he said.

“There will be an ultimate strategy at the end of the day, but people will implement much more granularly their BI process and therefore be much more successful.”

A recent poll by Gartner found that most respondents plan to use Microsoft Business Intelligence over the next few months.
