The usability of a businesses’ website is just as important, if not more than, the search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques a firm may have in place, according to one expert.

Eric Enge, writer of SearchEngineWatch, has advised that search engines recognise usability data in a number of ways and this is just as influential to results as the application of SEO.

It is worth remembering the basic principle that “the business of the search engines is enhanced by having the most relevant results in their index,” said Mr Enge.

He recommends that “having a clean site hierarchy and an easily understood navigation structure also benefits both usability and SEO”.

Other factors Mr Enge urges marketers to consider is how many users bookmark their site and also the bounce rate of those who view their pages.
