FAQs

We have put together a list of common questions that we are asked. If there is something that you want to know, do feel free to give our data experts a call.

I know I need data for my next B2B marketing campaign but I don’t know where to start – can you help?

Of course! We have a friendly team of data experts that will book you in for a call to discuss your campaign and your needs. We also have a Data Consultancy service where one of our experts will come to you and hold a ‘data discovery workshop’ to see what data you currently hold and where we can help you get the most out of your campaigns.

I only want to buy small amounts of data at a time – is this possible?

We have an online tool called Marketscan Online (previously known as ListBuilder). This allows you to download B2B data for your marketing campaigns as and when you want 24 hours a day! Just register an account at www.marketscan.online and give it a go. If you get stuck, our team are always here to help.

Where do you get your data?

Our data comes from 5 top UK sources; 118 Information, Thomson Directories, Dun & Bradstreet, Corpdata & Companies House. We receive over 8m records from our feeds on a monthly basis. These are meticulously blended into a single file, the Marketscan Megabase™. We then check for the latest verified data to ensure we use the most up-to-date source for each data element, which results in a database of superior quality and coverage. All of our sources adhere to GDPR and PECR.

How many times can I use the data?

All data is sold on a license – this is to ensure the data is not used inappropriately or spammed. With all of our data you can purchase a single use license or a 12 month license. Our data experts will ensure you have the best license to suit your needs. When buying email data you may not exceed more than 12 emails to any one addresses in a 12 month period and not exceed more than 4 emails to any one addressee in any one calendar month. Once your license expires you will no longer have permission to contact the data unless they have expressed a wish to be contacted by you again in the future (for example by becoming a customer). You will either receive an email or a phone call from one of our team to let you know that your data is nearing expiry so you don’t accidentally use it out of license.

Don’t forget to stay compliant you must also check your phone numbers against the TPS/CTPS every 28 days. You can do that on our Marketscan Online Tool.

Can I use MailChimp to send my email campaigns?

There are a number of ESP’s (email service providers) who, as part of their T&C’s, refuse to allow you to send to a purchased list. These ESP’s include some of the most well know, MailChimp, Campaign Monitor and Pardot just to name a few, the reason that they give for this is that purchased list are “bad” or “shady”. We are fully aware that there are numerous organisations who misuse data be it purchased or from other sources. We know, from experience, that when data is used correctly and inline with best practice it is an invaluable tool for reaching a wide audience and entering new market at a relatively low cost.

These ESP’s that we have mentioned have a total ban on purchased data as they try to “protect” their clients (best practice needs to be followed for protect the ESP’s, does not matter if its opt in or purchased data that is being used). A large percentage of mass email senders use their own domain and email accreditation to try and ensure deliverability but also protect the sending domain of the ESP’s itself. There is an obvious reason why they would want to work in this way especially as, in a lot of cases, their services are free.

When using an in-house ESP or one off the shelf, you have the ability to send professional, personalised and, importantly, targeted emails to brand new prospects based on what information you have (Big Data) to hand when you find an ESP who accept bought (we have a few we can recommend) data you can increase your pipeline while your sales team are focused on closing business, and we have the testimonials to prove it.

You might also be interested to know that we have our own email sending platform that you are welcome to send your email campaigns from. You can find out more about Marketscan Edge here.

Is your data GDPR compliant?

Yes it is. The GDPR applies to organisations processing and holding personal data within the EU. It also applies to organisations outside the EU that offer goods or services to individuals in the EU. You can read more about GDPR and data compliance here.

We are also a founder member of the Data & Marketing Association who champion compliance and best practice within the marketing industry. We regularly attend the DMA Marketing & Legal hub so we know the changes within data & law. We are also in regular contact with the ICO to ensure that we are compliant.

What are the rules for TPS/CTPS?

If you have a database, of any size, you need to make sure your prospects are happy to be on it. The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and the Corporate Telephone Preference Service (CTPS) registers give people a chance to ‘opt-out’ of receiving unsolicited sales calls. Every business is required to check the data they hold against these registers every 28 days. Our TPS/CTPS checker makes this really easy to do. If you don’t, you could face a fine.

I am new in my role and have inherited the companies current database. Can you help me analyse this, see what is up to date and also help me work out a strategy for the next 12 months?

Absolutely! We don’t just sell data, we are also able to advise and assist with your data-driven marketing campaigns. We offer a free data health check of any data file to help you understand the quality of your contact list, enabling you to address any potential issues. We also offer an optional market penetration report, which will show ways of expanding your market through the addition of carefully selected new data. Our data experts are also on hand to give general advice or to help you in more depth to build a strategy.

I have been contacted by a company who said that they got my data from Marketscan. CAN I REMOVE MY DATA FROM YOUR DATA LISTS?

No problem. At Marketscan we don’t own the data that we sell, but we will investigate and let you know which supplier your data record came from. We will blacklist it in our Marketscan Megabase so it can’t appear again in the future, and give you the contact details for our suppliers so that you can request removal from their data as well. To do this we need a few details from you, please email [email protected] and we will look into this for you.
