In order to achieve marketing success, email marketers need to know exactly who their competition is, according to Compete.

The company’s new white paper, Five Simple Steps to Online Marketing Success, advises marketers to create a list of competitors within their space and identify the reasons precisely why they pose a threat.

After identifying their rivals, marketers should use quality metrics such as number of page views and unique visitors to fully maximise their return on investment and make the next logical business decisions.

“Some competitive intelligence solutions provide visibility into metrics for competitors’ sites that are much like the ones analysed using local web analytics tools,” the company said.

Marketers were also advised to increase their search traffic and campaign performance by analysing their competitors’ search marketing trend and keywords.

Additionally, using local web analytics tools allow marketers to see what keywords are sending traffic to their site and how much of that traffic is paid compared to natural search.
