Businesses have been urged to “harness the power of the media” to ensure that they market themselves effectively.

Public relations firm Publicity Heaven states that marketing can give a firm “credibility” and has launched a competition to help get stories about a small UK business into newspapers.

However, Martin Butler from the firm gave tips that are relevant to companies of all sizes: “The most powerful thing any business can do is both advertise in their target media, and send them press releases with story suggestions.

“It’s the perfect marketing mix.”

He claims that if a high number of customers see a business appear in the media, the more widely known the name becomes, making it increasingly likely that the brand will be chosen over others.

“Appearing in a story in the media can give you a huge amount of credibility. That’s because your message is being delivered by journalists that the readers trust,” he added.
