A new survey reveals that the vast majority of marketers believe search engine optimisation (SEO) is important to their business.

The poll, conducted by Practical eCommerce, found that 95 per cent of online firms questioned cite SEO as an indispensable part of their business operation.

More than eight in ten (82 per cent) of firms said their websites are optimised for search engines so they can achieve a good ranking in web search results.

The survey found that many companies are still trying to fully grasp the concept of SEO and come to terms with its implications.

Around 40 per cent of respondents said they completely understand what SEO is, while more than half (54 per cent) said they only understand the concept somewhat.

Tom Demers, director of marketing at search engine marketing software company WordStream, recently expressed his belief that SEO is set to become the dominant marketing channel on online and offline platforms due to its cost-effectiveness.
